Following President Nayib Bukele’s victorious war on crime, which saw El Salvador’s homicide rate plummet from among the highest in the world to a third lower than the global average, he has announced a war on corruption within his own administration. Bukele recently brought every official from the Executive Branch of his government before the country’s attorney general to announce that they will be investigated for bribery. This comes only days after Presidential Commissioner Christian Herson Flores Sandoval was arrested on charges of bribery by the attorney general.

With the initiative, Bukele said he wants to ensure that the lawmakers of El Salvador are held to the same standard as the people and will make a renewed effort to root out corruption within his own ranks. Citing the previous administration of Duerte, Bukele remarked that the former president wasn’t a thief, but was surrounded by them and so it mattered nonetheless. Not wanting to be remembered the same way, Bukele declared he would not allow corruption to go unchecked under his leadership. It seems El Salvador’s “strongman” has resolved to punish criminals who steal from the Salvadoran people, whether they roam the streets or the halls of power.
