Ukrainian generals issued a dire warning, stating that they have exhausted their reserves to counter Russia’s sudden assault on Kharkiv. Vladimir Putin has amassed over half a million troops on the frontline, aiming to overwhelm Ukraine’s defenses. The Ukrainian military is struggling to contain the advance in the northeast region of the country.
General Kyrylo Budanov, head of Kiev’s military intelligence, admitted, “I’ve used everything we have. Unfortunately, we don’t have anyone else in the reserves.” Putin’s forces have swiftly captured significant territory in their rapid advances, marking the initial phase of Russia’s summer offensive.
Despite indications that the Russian advance may have slowed, Ukraine remains wary due to Putin’s substantial numerical advantage. Royal United Services Institute war expert Dr. Jack Watling emphasized Ukraine’s bleak prospects without additional troops, as Russia’s forces now exceed 510,000.
Ukraine faces limitations in confronting Russian forces near the border, as the US has restricted its use of weapons like Himars rockets in enemy territory. Former UK joint chief General Sir Richard Barrons noted that this restriction has allowed Russian forces to organize leisurely, hindering Ukraine’s ability to disrupt their formations.
Russia initiated a brutal offensive in Kharkiv, northeastern Ukraine, deploying nearly 40,000 soldiers and 500 tanks. Heavy fighting has displaced thousands of residents, prompting Ukraine to reinforce its defenses. Ukrainian soldiers reported facing human wave attacks, a tactic aimed at gaining territory at significant cost.
To counter Russia’s escalating aggression, Ukraine has begun deploying kamikaze drones. Additionally, Ukrainian forces launched aerial and missile strikes on Russian-held territories, including the port city of Sevastopol in occupied Crimea, and regions across Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk, utilizing long-range missiles supplied by the US.
