Former NBA player Glen “Big Baby” Davis was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for his role in a fraud scheme that targeted the NBA Players’ Health and Welfare Benefit Plan, resulting in over $5 million in losses.
This scheme involved multiple former NBA players, including former Detroit Pistons guard Will Bynum, who submitted false medical and dental claims. More than 20 individuals were convicted in connection with this case.
Davis, who also received a three-year supervised release order and must pay $80,000 in restitution, was found guilty of several charges, including health care fraud and wire fraud. His co-defendant, Will Bynum, was sentenced last month to 18 months in prison and three years of supervised release, and he must pay $182,224 in restitution.
The fraudulent activities involved collaborating with doctors and dentists to create fake invoices submitted for reimbursement to the insurance plan. Davis, notable for his basketball career with the Boston Celtics and other teams, as well as being a key player in LSU’s 2006 NCAA championship run, has faced significant legal consequences for his actions in this conspiracy.
